Burp and Bath

At least I have used the flannel that I bought last week. All of it except the pigs. Need to find something special for the pigs. Made 24 contoured burp cloths. Need to iron and add top stitching but otherwise they are done. Most will go to a co-worker having a baby boy. Her shower is this weekend.
And even used all the natural colored terry cloth. Made 8 bath mitts. They were actually fairly eary to make. Although I may make them a tad bit bigger next time. Fit my hand fine but if I wanted one of the guys to use them they would be a little small.

Shhhh...

I broke down at lunch and bought some completely unneeded fabric. But the flannel was 50% off and I really wanted to make a few burp cloths. I haven't really done a splurge like this in a while.

Remember I have teenagers. Not a lot of use for burp cloths at my house. Do you see that precious little piggie peeking out on the left. I bought all they had of it (less than two yards). The reason you need to be quiet about my fabric is David called a few minutes ago. He has been in hot water with me all week. Said the kids were going to a movie with friends and did I want to grab a milk shake and go to the fabric store tonight.

He really wants to find LSU fabric for the special request apron, it is for one of the guys he works with. But I know I need to get a list together while he has his wallet open.

Birthday Giveaway

It is not my birthday but if I won one of the prizes from See Katie Sew it sure would feel like my birthday. Check out her blog here for a chance to win one of 20 prizes. It would be hard to pick my favorite. Love the baby bibs, not necessarily a practical pattern for me with teenagers.

There are even non sewing related items in the giveaway for you non-sewers out there.

Hex Flowers

A few more hex flowers I got done. It may be too over jealous but I am thinking a table runner out of the hex flowers.
Trying to use up some of the fabric from the stash. Actually this was more of the craigslist fabric I got several months ago. I had made two aprons but one was already given away. And now I have a special request for a LSU apron. Quick way to use up yards of fabric.
Finished another boxy pouch last night. Bought some terry cloth material in hopes of a new project or two this weekend. Not alot of hope in getting much crafting done this weekend. Mason has a college visit to the Univeristy of Memphis. We are taking Kim along also, maybe a glimpse at a future will cut back on the recent drama. One can hope.

Pacific Blue

Pacific Blue sounds like a color that I would like. David did a good job picking out my new toy.

He is trying to get himself out of hot water over all the traveling and special requests he has had lately. This might just do it.

Hex Heaven and Bib Madness

I was having problems getting photos onto my laptop to upload. Finally here is what I have been playing with lately. 20 plus bibs in progress. Actually half are now finished, added snaps yesterday. Did you know that if you are really organized you can find your accessories and will actually spend less money. I had a 50% off coupon and was going to buy myself a new snap/grommet pliers but I just knew I had one hid somewhere at the house. I resisted the temptation to buy a new one. Bought pinking sheers instead, knew I didn't own a pair of those. And in 5 minutes of searching found the pliers for snaps in a box at the house. Maybe it is spring cleaning time. Oh, I even found two 18" zippers while looking. More boxy pouches in the near future.
Started some hexagons out of scraps I had. Fun way to relive old projects. Plus I just love the flower look of these. The teflon hexs are working out great so far. I haven't been feeling well the past couple of days. Went to bed at 8:30 yesterday. Hopefully I will find some energy soon.

Buttercups in the Spring

We had nice spring weather last week and Buttercup took full advantage of it. Everytime someone walked by the back door she convinced them she needed to go outside. She loves the sunshine. Nothing more fun than rolling around in warm grass. I think she is finally putting a little bit of weight back on. She may be up to 6 pounds now.

Least Favorite

Very productive weekend of sewing. Funny thing is I only remembered to take a photo of the project that I disliked. This bag is way too tiny for me or anyone else that I know. I purposely made it out of fabric that was not my taste that someone had given me. For some reason I knew before I started it that I wouldn't be happy with it.
I made a little over 20 baby bibs out of scrap fabric. Need to finish the snaps and ties. Started on the hexagons with the simple shapes. What a fabulous hand sewing project. We will see how bored I get with these. Photos coming soon.
David made it home safely through Denver. The freak snow storm didn't stop him. One of his co-workers few a different airline through Texas and got delayed a day.

Simple Shapes Hexagon

I am not really a vintage quilt kind of person. Most vintage quilts do nothing for me. But hexagons fascinate me. I have wanted to start a hexagon project but have been hesitant when I hear stories of them not getting completed. Ran into Joann's at lunch today looking for a hexagon kit of some kind. Didn't really find what I was looking for but found this instead. Teflon hexagons. Baste around the fabric, tighten around the hexagon and iron. Teflon won't melt. Use the pokey thing to remove the fabric. Comes with 25 Teflon hex's. I think I could baste in front of the television and actually spend time with the family.
Used my 40% off coupon so cost me $6. We might have a winner here. I will have to let you know. I like hand sewing so we will see how this works out. I may learn to despise hand sewing. I did see a project someone did with hexs. It was a mug mat (coaster). I may be able to make one that size without getting bored.
If snow in Denver doesn't hold up David he will be home tomorrow. He has lots of recorded shows to watch so I may be in hexy heaven (or the other word that starts with H).

Pleated Bag

I am not a fan of skull and cross bones and believe it or not I am not really a fan of rainbows. But these are two of Kim's favorite things so I made a test bag from a pleated bag pattern I found online. I really like the pattern and style. NOT a fan of the fabric. I was actually calling it hideous to Kim, rainbows on the inside were just too much. Note that it is all packed and ready to go to school when the photo was taken. And can you see the portfolio I made the other day packed inside. The one I was going to take a pair of scissor to in a hope of reclaiming the fabric. Well she has totally claimed that also.

David's flight doesn't arrive until later on Saturday hopefully I will have some sewing and crafting time before I have to run pick him up.

Pixie Dust Fabric Giveaway

Another fabulous cotton giveaway. The Farm Chicks Blog has a Pixie Dust Giveaway. Well worth a couple of moments to stop by for a chance to win. I was really leaning towards the boys prints as my favorites but that would be so typical of me. So to surprise myself and anyone else that knows me the two I would like to win are Aqua Pagoda and Aqua Lattice. How fun would it be to win.

Portfolio Tutorial

My portfolio sample was a flop in my opinion. I did find this tutorial which looks like a super easy version. I am going to give it one more try before I completely call this quits.

Pin Cushions

We got Kim her own sewing machine for Christmas. She hasn't used it very much but I think once school is out she will use it more over the summer. She ran off with my pin cushion and pins the other night. Which has prompted me to make her a pin cushion of her own. They still need buttons sewn in the middle but I did get three of them completed. Great way to use up those little scraps of fabric. I actually fished some scraps out of the trash to make these.

Cotton Giveaway

If you are a cotton fabric junkie like me you need to check out this fabulous giveaway at Mrs. Schmenkman Quilts. But hurry you only have until April 17, 2009 to enter.

The colors are gorgeous. I just became a follower on her blog. She has some fabulous inspriation.

A Few Minutes

I had a few minutes between work, running the kids around, dealing with their drama and making dinner. Threw together a couple of key chains. I had found jeweled D rings on clearance. Added a nice touch to the key rings.
Used some more fabric from the stash to create this tote bag. Getting a bit tired of tote bags. Found a free pattern for a pleated bag so I think I will try that next. Bought some coordinating fabric to use more from my stash. Does that even make sense? I had to buy fabric to use fabric. I didn't have anything that would coordinate with the patriotic fabrics (see behind the key rings above) from my craigs list purchase. Bought 2 1/2 yards but will be able to take the stash down by the same amount.
Remember the portfolio that I made that I hated. Well Kim loves it. I told her as long as I never had to look at it again she could have it.
Maybe the kids will give me a break on the drama tonight and I can have some uninterrupted sewing time just for me.

Stash Busting

I went into Hancock Fabrics today and didn't buy fabric. Walked away spending less than $5 on a spool of lime green thread and a beige zipper. How exciting is that. I am trying very hard to work on reducing my stash right now. Of course this may not last long. But trying to limit my purchases to reducing something in my stash. Like the thread was to make a bag from fabric out of the stash. The zipper was to use up a couple of scraps out of the stash. Feeling good about the stash busting.

Ready for David to come home from Oregon and deal with the kids for a while. Drivers Ed behind the wheel is this week. That is stressful enough without the other kid thinking the world revolves around her. Consequences for her actions is a tough reality lesson that is being learned the hard way.

My weekend

My weekend filled with lots of sewing. The portfolio looks better in a photo than it does in person.
I think I am going to destruct it and make something else. This is one of those things I should have followed a pattern.
Boxes turned out OK. I won't destruct them but I wouldn't give them to anyone either. Think I just need to try this one again with lessons learned.
More boxy pouches from left over fabric. These sure are super easy to make. And a couple key chains from the scraps.
This is from the fat quarters I bought at Joanns when the first opened. Finally used it all. Now I can buy more, Right?
Speaking of buying fabric. I picked up a 1/2 yard of each of these before Mason and I went to the movies on Friday. As you can see from the other projects I got a lot of mileage out of the fabrics. Down to scraps now. But I do have a project planned.

And The Winner Is...

And the winner of the monster is an anonymous post which isn't actually anonymous since she emailed me after she did it. Valerie I hope your pantry is well stocked because the monster is hungry. He will be packaged and sent to you this week.

Too tired to show you what I have been working on today. I will show photos tomorrow.

More Boxy Pouches

A couple more pouches. My mom had sent me some zippers a couple of months ago. I finally put them to good use. The little one I added a tab to hang on to while zipping the pouch. The larger one is made from the brown fabric left over from Kim's shirt she made. Nice to make a few more without buying any supplies.

Mason and I ran into Hobby Lobby before the movie today. I picked up some fabric to make a few bags and a knit to make shirt for myself.

Little Boxy Pouch

The little boxy pouch is done. It was a 7 inch zipper that someone sent to me in a swap. Cute size to throw in a diaper bag to hold little items that would get lost. Kim finished sewing a top for herself yesterday. She gave me the extra fabric and wants a boxy pouch made from it. Mason and I have lunch and movie plans today. I will try to pick up a few more zippers on the way home.

Mason finished the classroom part of his drivers education yesterday. He had the highest test score in the class. Doesn't surprise me. He will finish the behind the wheel portion next week. Then the scary part begins, he will actually be driving.

Today is the last day to to leave a comment on any or all of my posts dated March 30 thru April 10, 2009 and you will be entered into a drawing to have the monster stuffie come live with you. Broccoli-Cheese Rice Casserole

I guess since the Broccoli-Cheese Rice Casserole got rave reviews today I should give you the recipe for it also.

From my Aunt Ann (via my sister Val):
Here's the Broccoli-Cheese Rice Casserole. I don't usually use the exact amounts. If I use more broccoli than the recipe calls for, I increase the other ingredients, of course.
Broccoli-Cheese Rice Casserole
2 - 10 oz. pkgs of frozen broccoli (cook slightly, then drain)
Add:
1 can mushroom soup
4-5 fresh mushrooms, cut up (I just use a couple of cans)
Touch of garlic
1 stick margarine
3/4 cup diced onion
1 lb. Velveeta, cubed
1 cup cooked rice
Mix all and bake at 325 for 45 minutes. (I just put mine in the crockpot for 2-3 hours instead.)

Note: I used a jumbo 320z bag of broccoli, 1 1/2 cups of rice before it was cooked and two cans of mushroom soup. It was delicious. As with sewing patterns I don't follow recipes real well either. More of a wing it as I go type of person.

Grape Salad

We had an Easter potluck lunch at work today. Which is why I made the broccoli-cheese rice casserole. But I have to give you this recipe. It is perfect for a potluck, make it ahead of time and requires no heating.

First I have to tell you the source. Courtney is the cutest little thing at our office. She was the receptionist for about a year, now handles management support services. I don't think she is 5 feet tall in heels and at 7 months pregnant I doubt she weighs 100 pounds. And sweet as can be. She made the best Grape salad and here is the recipe in her words.

It is so easy…

1 bag of red seedless grapes
1 bag of green seedless grapes
1 8oz. thing of cream cheese (softened)
1 8oz. thing of sour cream
½ cup white sugar
1tsp vanilla
Brown sugar to taste
Pecans to taste

- wash grapes
- in a separate bowl, mix cream cheese, sour cream, white sugar and vanilla until well blended
- pour over grapes and mix together ( I usually separate the grapes into 2 bowls and then pour the cream cheese mixture over each bowl, because there are so many grapes and it is hard to mix it all in one bowl )
- sprinkle and mix brown sugar to taste
- top with pecans or mix them in

I always use the fat free or low fat cream cheese and sour cream to make it a little healthier.

Note: a quilt for Courtney's baby shower will be started shortly.

Little Boxy and Broccoli

I picked out the fabric for the little boxy pouch. But that is as far as I got. Too much running around getting another rental vehicle and grocery shopping.
Hmm... Recipe for broccoli cheese rice casserole. From my sister, from our Aunt Ann. The ladies in Payroll are mad at me because I left it there in the crockpot and told them they couldn't eat it. Thanks for the recipe if it tastes as good as it smells we have a winner.

*** Update on the casserole, it was all gone in a flash. I didn't even get to eat any of it. Thank you to Val and Ann for the recipe.

Boxy Pouch Bigger

Had a pink 14" zipper that someone had sent me as part of a swap.

Worked out perfectly for a bigger Boxy Pouch. It would make a nice travel size bag for toiletries. Instead of the 8x6 pieces of fabric with the 9 inch zipper. I used 2 pieces of fabric 12x10 inches. I have a little 6 inch pale green zipper that was also sent to me. Hopefully tonight it will find a little boxy pouch of its own. So far I have used all scrap fabric and bought nothing to make these little pouches. The fusible fleece onces are so much nicer. But the plain fabric ones fit nicely into a standard envelop, and I don't think they will require any additional postage. A couple of them are going in the mail today.

I got my car back yesterday after almost a month of trying to get it repaired from the tire accident. And I get to take it back to them today. The low tire pressure sensor isn't working correctly. I assume it will take them a few more days to fix it. ARGH!!! I miss driving my car.

Boxy Round 2

Round 2 is much much better. I added the fusible fleece to the two pieces before I sewed it together. It gave the bag some sturdiness and stability it didn't have before. I have finally used up my 9 inch zippers that were laying around. I have a couple other sizes I may modify the pattern to make them different sizes.

Boxy Pouches

The little boxy pouches were super easy to make. I highly recommend them. They are a little flimsy since they are not lined. I think I will try some fusible fleece on the fabric to give them stability and weight. Kim had an eye on them this morning. They are just the right size for her digital camera. I would guess I am losing one this afternoon. Great project to use up some of those zippers and smaller pieces of fabric you have laying around the sewing room.

Buttercup is enjoying her platypus. They are all done. Not my favorite project but they turned out OK.

Platypus

Mason knew it was platypus so I must have done something right. They are not stuffed yet. I need to do little bit of shopping today, not sure how much more I will get done.

Fast and Furious

My Saturday is disappearing fast and furious. Started at 4am, driving David to the airport. Barely got home to find out his flight was canceled. The guys he was flying with made a few calls and got approval to use the corporate jet. But David needed his id badge to get into the corporate hangar. Off to the airport again to deliver his badge. I am almost to the airport and he calls saying they don't need the badge I can go home. ARGH!!

Stopped by the post office and bought groceries on the way home. Delivered Kim to a friends house to spend the night. Mason and I went to see Fast and Furious. It wouldn't of been my choice of movies but I did enjoy it. Got home and the day is gone.

I have the platypus pattern enlarged and printed. Hopefully a good nights sleep and starting fresh in the morning.

Two Weeks

David is leaving in the morning for Oregon for two weeks.

Here is part of my project plan while he is gone:

Platypus Stuffie
Patchwork pin cushion
Boxy Pouch
Art Airplane Binder
The question is will the kids leave me alone long enough to get anything done?

Mason is going through Drivers Ed this week and next. He watched Red Asphalt 3 on Wednesday. I can't complain Mason is usually a pretty easy kid, not a risk taker to begin with. But I don't think he will be speeding anytime soon.

April Fools

Kim and Mason have been worried for days we are going to play a practical joke on them today. Funny thing is I really don't think we play that many on the kids. However, the kids think differently. I really haven't even thought about it.

Maybe just the thought of us playing a practical joke is joke enough for both of them. Sure will keep them on their toes today.

Too much work going on this week and not enough play time.
